ShÅ?jo or even shoujo (少女 lit. miss) is, inside american usage, the style of anime and manga intended for girls (that may keep close at hand a bit of crossover appeal to boys too).

Occasionally, "pure shÅ?jo" mangthe revolves in romance & hard female protagonists; but, a few shÅ?jo anime & manga come other plot/action-oriented to attract a wider audience. E.g., very much of older salarymen were drawn to a manga called Banana Fish for its hard-edged yakuza action (which is more typically observed inside seinen manga). What saved female audiences concerned in that act was the gentle relationship between 2 gay bishÅ?nen lovers amongst all the violence.

ShÅ?jo anime & manga typically contain elements of shÅ?nen-ai or even yaoi (sexual relationship between male characters) does'nt to mention shÅ?jo-ai and, recently, yuri (sexual relationship between female characters). A esthetic of the bishÅ?nen is very prominent. A second super popular genre is magical girl, of which the far-famed series Sailor Moon is a prime example.

ShÅ?jo should exist as distinguished from either bishÅ?jo (pretty lassie); a latter term refers, somewhat decoct, to content like than target market. ShÅ?jo is manga/anime for girls; bishÅ?jo is manga/anime that has pretty girls, commonly targeted towards the male audience.

Numerous shÅ?jo titles come typically described when dark & moody, which is occasionally counterintuitive from either the American viewpoint.

Understand too shÅ?nen, anime and manga meant for boys; josei, anime & manga meant for grownup women; and seinen, anime and manga arranged for full-grown men.
